    Pearl

Pearls differ from most other gemstones in that they are organic in nature instead of mineral. Formed within the soft tissue layer of mollusks, pearls have been highly valued as gemstones since antiquity. Extremely rare in the wild, cultured or farmed pearls make up the majority of the pearls sold today. Natural or cultured, the quality of a pearl is based on its luster and color (body color and overtone), both of which are determined by the thin layers of nacre formed by secretions of the mollusk it which it is grown.
