    Spinel

Often confused for other gemstones throughout history spinel may be one of the most underappreciated gems. Only fairly recently has spinel been recognized as a gemstone in its own right and in 2016 spinel was adopted as the newest August birthstone. Even so, synthetic spinel is often used as imitations for other, more expensive, gem stones.
